Throw back Thursday! Leeds United stadium, Elland Road – 1991

In 1991 Greens Decorating were contracted by GMI Construction to paint the main structural steel work of the iconic Leeds United, Elland Road stadium. At the time, the football stadium underwent significant renovation that included repainting all of the structural steelwork.

The works involved the application of the the most advanced (for the time!) anti-corrosive, protective steel coatings on both the external and internal steelwork in a new colour scheme designed to enhance the appearance of the stadium befitting a team reaching the highest levels within English and European football.

These recently found photos show Robbie Mcewan, (17 years old at the time) one of our second year apprentices. Now in his 33rd year at Greens, Robbie (no longer 17!) is one of Contracts Managers and looks after a variety of projects.

We’re pleased to say that health and safety requirements have improved significantly over the last 30 years so we’re unlikely to see photos like this again, sat atop a football stadium without any fall protection!
